Gartens

The southern slope of the hill, crowned by the Prague Castle complex, played above all the defensive role when the fort was built. The foundation of a rampart system is dated by the year 1241. By the beginning of the 16th century the protective function came to an end of its primary role and the whole area with gardens and vineyards was bought up by patricians and rich burghers. New owners changed the gardens and vineyards to renaissance gardens in an Italian style that served for leisure and amusement purposes and as a support of owner´s social distinction. A number of sala terrena, pavilions and fountains serve as an interconnection between the gardens. So a continuous garden belt was founded and it has been preserved till today. It consists of Ledebour Gardens and Small Palffy Gardens, Great Palffy Gardens, Kolowrat and Fürstenberk Gardens.
